Professional Summary

I am a tenured Associate Professor at the Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University. The Honors College is a selective residential liberal arts degree program within a larger “Research II” university. The mission of the Honors College is centered on the traditional disciplines in the liberal arts and sciences. We place significant weight on analytical thinking, independent study and research, and exposure to cross-disciplinary approaches. The College features small classrooms, an intensive learning environment and a strong emphasis on oral and written communication skills: A research-oriented thesis is required of every student. A significant share of our students have gone on to some of the best graduate and professional schools in the United States and elsewhere.

From January 2001 to mid-2005, I held a tenured appointment as a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor equivalent) in the Business School of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University), in Australia. Previous to that, I held a Lecturer position (Assistant Professor equivalent) in Economics at Melbourne’s Monash University for four years; I was granted a “continuing appointment” (tenure) at the end of my third year there. In addition to my work in Australia, I have studied and held positions around the world: I studied and taught in France, carried out research as a Fulbright Scholar in Sweden, held a visiting academic position in Ireland, and have taught in Singapore as part of a joint degree program with RMIT.

My research generally falls within one of three subfields in economics—political economy, entrepreneurship, and applied microeconomics—although I have also published some pedagogical work as well. My research in political economy focuses primarily on the institutional aspects of the redistributive welfare state and the analysis of compulsory voting rules. My work in political economy has been published in Public Choice, European Journal of Political Economy, European Journal of Law and Economics, Public Finance Review, and Brazilian Political Science Review.

My work in entrepreneurship aims to develop a “process-oriented” approach to an area that remains underdeveloped and under-appreciated in mainstream economics. I have published articles on entrepreneurship in Journal of History of Economic Thought, Division of Labour & Transaction Costs, and as a chapter in Metcalfe and Cantner’s Change, Transformation and Development (2003).

I am also involved in an array of applied microeconomics projects that tend to have an industrial organization focus. Most of these have developed with students following class research assignments. These projects have included analyzing issues in the sports and alcohol industries, published in Sport Management Review and Applied Economics; the latter paper also appears in abridged (case study) form in Waldman and Jensen’s Industrial Organization: Theory and Practice (2007). I have projects, in progress, in the area of status goods, organ transplantation, and cyclical patterns in real estate.

My undergraduate teaching has been primarily in microeconomics, political economy, law and economics, and public policy; my honors and master’s-level teaching has been in applied/managerial microeconomics, public finance and public choice, law and economics, and research methods. I have considerable practice teaching in both large lecture halls and in small seminars, have supervised teaching assistants, and coordinated several large class streams.

In March 2010, I was awarded Florida Atlantic University’s highest university-wide teaching award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching. I have, moreover, supervised over 50 honors theses, and a significant percentage of my advisees have presented their work at international conferences or published in refereed academic journals.

Finally, I have had considerable experience and success in administration and program development. I served as the founding Director of FAU’s Honors Summer Institute, a science-oriented program established in collaboration with the renowned Scripps Research Institute. Previous to that, I was specifically tasked to inaugurate and direct that School’s new Honors Degree program. Both programs continue to very successfully educate highly achieving students.

On a slightly different note, here are some recordings of my blues-ish-funk-ish-rock-ish band in Australia (co-authors are Geoff, Mark, Ashley, and Bill).
